Datweiler Family Bible

Family bibles play an important role in preserving family histories as well as being a potential source of vital records. Sometimes the handwritten notes, documenting family marriages and deaths are the only records available.

Susan Young's grandfather with the family Bible.

The Datweiler Family Bible was donated to the Tritt Library and Archives in 2009, by Susan Young of Houston, Texas.
Printed in Loerrach, Switzerland the bible was presented to Andrew and Susanna Datweiler November 13, 1753, when they married in Biel, Canton Bern.
Ms. Young wanted to ensure her family history and bible would be preserved.
After doing her research, she concluded the best home for this family treasure was the Swiss Center of North America because of its Tritt Library and Archives.
The task of printing this beautiful bible was quite time consuming.
Every letter was set by hand.  Once set, crude wooden hand presses allowed the printer to transfer ink to paper. The cover is leather.
